Content development and structural editing
Content that communicates in a voice your audience understands
Shaping early-stage content into effective communication, so it makes sense and makes an impact.
Health and medical content isn’t just about accuracy. It also needs clear structure, logical flow and a strong sense of purpose. Even well-researched material can lose readers if information is difficult to navigate or key messages become unclear.
I help health organisations, researchers and charities develop content into clear, engaging resources that communicate complex information effectively.
The content development process
Content development (also called structural editing) focuses on the overall organisation, direction and effectiveness of a piece while it’s still being developed. I review structure, flow, messaging and audience focus, providing feedback on areas that need clarification, restructuring or further development.
The aim is to shape complex information into content that is coherent, purposeful and appropriate for its intended audience.
Types of content I work with
Research and public-facing summaries or reports for professionals or the public
Patient information and treatment guides
Educational resources
Clinical and professional documents
Website and service content
Internal communications
Messaging: Strengthening key ideas so they are clear, logical and well supported.
Structure and flow: Organising information so content flows clearly and cohesively.
Clarity and development: Identifying areas that need expansion, clarification or refinement.
Presentation: Suggesting ways to improve readability, layout and overall organisation.
Audience focus: Ensuring content is appropriate for the knowledge and needs of its intended audience.
Repetition and gaps: Flagging repeated information, missing content and areas lacking balance.
What I focus on
During a structural edit, I'll review and address elements that form the foundation of your content.
Deliverables
Following a structural edit, I provide practical, high-level feedback to help strengthen the clarity, organisation and effectiveness of your content.
This may include:
track changes and margin comments
suggested reorganisation of sections or content
recommendations for clearer presentation, such as tables, flowcharts or algorithms
follow-up to discuss feedback and next steps

Scope of content development
Content development focuses on the organisation, development and communication of your content rather than sentence-level correction.
It is often part of plain language work, particularly when content needs significant reorganisation to improve accessibility and usability. You can learn more on my Plain language editing page.
Content development does not usually include:
rewriting entire sections
carrying out additional research
detailed copyediting for grammar, punctuation and style
Copyediting is typically carried out at a later stage once the structure and content are finalised. Visit my Copyediting page to learn more.
